Economic Policy

As our city grows, our economy grows with it. But we have to be diligent in guiding that growth to make sure it is sustainable and equitable. Here’s how we can create a thriving economy where no one is left behind.

Universal Basic Income

Madison’s pilot study into universal basic income is one of the most exciting developments in our recent history. Other pilot programs have shown that these direct cash payments are tremendously helpful in lifting families out of poverty, closing the racial wealth gap, and letting people live rich, productive lives free from financial stresses. I am strong proponent of expanding the program so more households can receive these payments.

Invest in Small Business

Madison is home to some amazing locally-owned business. We have done a great job of supporting those looking to start or grow their own businesses, especially during the challenges of the pandemic. We have to continue these practices, while making sure that they are being directed to all entrepreneurs, particularly those in our low-income neighborhoods and communities of color.

Strengthen and Respect Unions

Strong unions protect members’ rights, raise wages for all workers, and lead to more equal wealth distribution between owners and workers. Despite attacks from our Republican legislature, union membership is on the rise in Wisconsin, and there is a lot Madison can do to expedite that growth. That starts with listening to and respecting the unions the city works and contracts with. We can also provide more resources and information to Madison workers who are interested in unionization, particularly those in retail, the service industry, and younger workers.

Remove Barriers To Employment

Despite our record low unemployment, some folks still struggle to find a job that offers a living wage. This could be because of housing insecurity, a lack of government ID, lack of transportation, or a host of other factors. I back policies to address these concerns, and I will always fight for investments that benefit the most vulnerable among us.
